The NICU Parent Program is a program of parent consultation that incorporates the trauma-sensitive focus of a specialty-trained NICU Psychologist. Families of hospitalized newborns get the support they need – both in the hospital and after baby comes home – via telehealth sessions using a laptop or smart phone, either from the hospital or in the comfort of their own homes. The NICU Parent Program is available to any family in California.
The program integrates NICU-specific, research-informed methods including support for collaboration with hospital staff, trauma-sensitive crisis intervention and emotional support, coping and resilience enhancement, infant-parent dyadic work, developmental guidance for full term, preemie, and medically fragile newborn care, NICU-aware support and assistance with baby sleep, feeding and fussiness issues, and more. Support is also provided to parents who have previously experienced stressful perinatal experiences of any kind (NICU-related or not) and who are adjusting to life as a parent, or who may be preparing for another pregnancy or birth.
Costs for consultation are charged to parents directly on an hourly basis. A portion of fees paid by parents goes to supporting other families in need by enabling a number of pro bono sessions for low-income families. Thank you to all for supporting the community of NICU families throughout California!
